This village is closely associated with the name of local artist Albert Anker who gained national fame with his scenes from 19th century country life. His old house, maintained by a foundation, can be visited by prior appointment. Ins is situated on a terrace at the edge of the Great Marsh with a view across the lakes of Biel, Murten and Neuchâtel and all the way to the Alps and the Jura Mountains. Mansions of patrician families from Bern and Neuchâtel side by side with Alemannic and Burgundian farmhouses give Ins its distinctive appearance. Ins is a starting point for walking or bicycle tours into Switzerland's largest vegetable growing area or to the shores of Lake Biel. The exquisitely beautiful "Fanel" bird reserve offers nature lovers a rare glimpse of birds in unspoiled surroundings.
