"The circle of medieval houses in Aarberg forms the starting point and destination of this tour. Riding the first few kilometres up the Aare is a fairly calm affair, then there is a chance to admire the wonders of the landscape during the warm-up phase all the way to the lake at Niederried. Here, the Aare is dammed in several places to provide electricity. The lake at Niederried has become a first-rate nature reserve. Many rare aquatic birds have chosen to live there and nestle in its reed belt. There is a similar situation around Lake Wohlen, a longer example. Sheltered from the construction of roads and houses, the plants and wildlife around these lakes have been able to develop wonderfully."
